Point6 is a lesser known brand in the quality hiking/backpacking sock world that deserves your attention. We’re taking a quick look at the “Boot” and “Heavy” offerings to see how they hold up on the trail. My review:
Starting with the “Trekking Heavy Crew” model, these are thick, ankle covering socks comprised made of Wool 79% | Nylon 18% | Elastic 3%. This gives them a lush, cushy, stretchy feel that allows them to stay in place without constricting the foot or ankle. They’re soft, feel practically seam free, and have a wonderful bouncy feel to the weave that lends well to backpacking with heavy loads over long distances, or just cooler weather hiking. They’re light weight enough to be used in the summer for those who need a bit more friction resistance or cushioning, without going with an extra heavy sock, like below. These fit a bit snug and are well suited for fast, lightweight hiking and scurrying alike.

Next we have the “Extra Heavy” boot socks. These are essentially the heavy crew socks, just thicker and more cushy. Built from a similar but tweaked ratio of maters, they are Wool 77% | Nylon 20% | Elastic 3%. These feel great in heavy hiking or backpacking boots, and stay mighty warm in the winter, without being too hot for summer use either. I’ve put many miles down on these with heavy loads and stiff boots and they performed excellent. I didn’t experience any stretching, bunching, or blisters along the way. They’ve held up great to the friction of the boots rubbing against them and they wash up nicely without piling or shrinking. These are my personal choice for backpacking right now and I can’t recommend them enough.

Prices vary per sock, but the above retail for $28 and $34 respectively, with occasional sales on each. I’ve been using each for about 3 months now and they’ve been holding up extreme well, with no real signs of wear despite many washings and hard miles on the trail. As a bonus, Point6 socks are guaranteed for life, which makes the asking price more bearable. \

Big thanks to Point6 for sending this over for review. I reached out and they were happy to provide me sample for testing. We couldn’t do this without their support.
