There’s nothing like stuffing a wet tarp or hammock into your backpack with a nice dry sleeping bag underneath it to soak up all that extra moisture. The Snakeskins from Hennessy Hammock are genius little system that is designed to prevent that from being a problem, or just to keep your gear clean.
The beauty comes in the simplicity of the design. The kit is simply two tubes of waterproof nylon that slide over the mounting straps of a hammock kit or even the hammock itself. When packing up, you simply slide the tubes along the tarp (for example) and it encloses the tarp as it goes, almost like a snake eating a snack. This compresses the hammock, tarp or whatever you’re working with into a tight tube, trapping it inside and creating a barrier to everything else.
They’re wonderfully convenient, and I love the fact that I can pack up my gear without soaking everything else. I found myself hiding under my tarp in the rain, packing up my hammock underneath while staying nice and dry. Once everything else was packed up and my backpack closed with the rain cover on and protected from the rain, I would slide the Snakeskins over the wet tarp, trapping it inside, disconnect it all from the tree, and then I can attach the wet tarp on the outside of my pack. Everything inside my pack stays dry, and the tarp has a chance to dry off outside when the rain stops. As a bonus, the Snakeskins protect my tarp from twigs and such as I hike out. The kit can also be used on the hammock itself to protect it as it’s taken down and set up, preventing sticks and such from catching on the bug net and from becoming dirty.
They retail for $19.95 (or free if you buy a hammock from Hennessy Directly), weigh just 2.3 oz, and are built from a tough yet waterproof 30D coated nylon. If you’re into hammock camping but hate wet gear, these are very easy to recommend.
