Comfort, durability, weight. These are the big three when it comes to choosing a hiking boot. Typically, users have to choose 2 out of 3 of these. However, the N45 changes this. My review:

Comfort, durability, and weight: The N45 craves them all. The boots are constructed from a full synthetic upper and lower, with GORE-TEX Invisible waterproof/windproof protection layered inside. The lowers sport a EnduroFoam Midsole, Vibram Megagrip outsole, and thick rugged lugs that should extend the life of the boots. They are also “Re-craftable”, meaning the sole is replaceable by Danner to further extend the life of the boots. They weigh just 29 oz. per pair (on average) and retail for $250 with 3 colors being available.

Wearing the Danner N45 has been a real pleasure. The boots fit snug and close, don’t shift or move around even on steep climbs, and they absorb impact extremely well over mile after mile or rocky trail. I didn’t notice a single seam or stitch on the inside, and the rounded laces feel great against the foot as they distribute the pressure of the boot extremely well. I really enjoyed just how stable they felt on rocky surfaces that jut randomly at all angles. They kept my ankles supported and sturdy when lesser boots would allow for a lot of shifting and rolling. Breathability was par for the course with Gore-Tex lined boots, but they did keep my feet dry and relatively cool even on hot summer hikes while crossing through mud and streams. Sizing felt true to size, if only the tiniest bit on the small side. I still managed to stay within my normal boot size with thick socks without issues though. If I had one tiny complaint it would be that the toe box is a touch narrow, but never actually caused me any issues aside from preference.

Durability has been great so far, with one minor point of concern. Despite sliding them down rocky banks, punching them with extruding roots and jagged rocks, and grinding the tread along rock, gravel and sand, they’re not showing any signs of degradation along the seams or tread. My only point of concern is the small, smooth patch of fabric that sits against the heel. I’ve saw this used on other Danner products and I tend to wear out that outer layer. The boots still work and feel fine afterwards, but something to point out as a concern as they seem to have carried that fabric over again.

The light-weight nature of these boots translates into more energy to expend on climbing or hiking. They feel nimble and unobtrusive when hopping around and scurrying up less than ideal inclines. I found that my feet and legs maintained their energetic feel longer in these than similarly built boots, mostly because of their feathery construction. I found the trail feel to be light and playful, which allowed me to hop and navigate quirky trail obstacles without issue. This is a real benefit to those who plan to hike long distances, or just cover a lot of ground in a short period of time.

I found these boots ideal for hiking, but also usable for backpacking when packing relatively light. I found they worked well for about 35 pounds of pack weight, and beyond that I craved a little more structure and arch support to help compensate for a hefty backpack and harder steps.

Visually, I also really enjoy the aesthetics of these boots. They’re clearly modern boots, yet fairly restrained in their visual flair. They first and foremost show of their modern materials, but also court fellow hikers with smooth lines and a relatively clean overall appearance. They also come in solid black and a white upper version, for those who prefer stealth or for some reason white. To each their own but I preferred the somewhat energetic look of the black/imperial blue variant.

Overall

I really adore the N45. These feel like the perfect combination of light-weight construct, rugged durability, repairability, and all day comfort. Aside from a minor concern with the fabric that lines the heel, there is nothing here that prevents me from recommending these for any use case, aside from heavyweight backpacking.
